The National Weather Service in El Paso Tx/Santa Teresa has issued a



* Flash Flood Warning for...

  The Salt and Soldier Canyon Burn Scars in...

  North Central Otero County in south central New Mexico...



* Until 430 PM MDT.



* At 123 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing 

  heavy rain over the Salt and Soldier Canyon Burn Scars. Between 

  0.5 and 1 inch of rain has fallen. Additional rainfall amounts up 

  to 1 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is 

  ongoing or expected to begin shortly.



Excessive rainfall over the warning area will cause mud slides near 

steep terrain. The mud slide can consist of rock, mud, vegetation 

and other loose materials.



  HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms

           producing flash flooding in and around the Salt and

           Soldier Canyon Burn Scars.



  SOURCE...Radar.



  IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of areas in and around

           the Salt and Soldier Canyon Burn Scars.



* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...

  Mescalero, Lake Mescalero, Mescalero Apache School, Bent, Apache 

  Summit and Soldier Canyon.



PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...



Move away from recently burned areas. Life-threatening flooding of 

creeks, roads and normally dry arroyos is likely. The heavy rains 

will likely trigger rockslides, mudslides and debris flows in steep 

terrain, especially in and around these areas.



In hilly terrain there are numerous low water crossings which are 

potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded 

roads. Find an alternate route.
